**Alternative Economics - What does this mean and how does it translate into practice ???** _This is one of the areas that people shared being most interested in from the [poll](https://communitywaves.space/content/perma?id=78185) we did a few weeks back._ - Is anyone in the group doing work exploring Alternative Economics ? If so, what kind of stuff are you doing (this could range in scale i.e. from running a workshop using alternative economics to creating a new currency for a city etc. ) - Are there any useful practices or resources that anyone has come across that might be useful to share more widely?? - Any challenges or learnings that you have experienced doing work with Alternative Economics ??

For my podcast, I covered a story about a barter market in Mexico City where they don’t use money and instead operate with their own community currency. They have been doing this for 15 years. The market offers basic products like bread and vegetables, and they have also included services such as physical therapy. I have been thinking about participating, but my biggest challenge is figuring out what to offer. Has anyone else faced a similar dilemma?

We’ve run bring and take stalls. The low-tech, social version of freecycle. Not done it since our lead on that moved away. But we do do plant ‘swaps’ on the same basis. If people offer money, we refuse, (but do have a donations box). The idea being that there is no transaction, so in effect you’re sort of obliged to remain part of the movement. You’re welcome to donate goods at any future time.

Yes, to not knowing what to offer. Someone in my town (Iowa City, USA) had a meeting to start one of these, and I am a psychotherapist. Not sure how to barter that in that sort of context. I have bartered for massage and Reiki in a shared group practice, and also work in the gift economy with a Song leader who is making Good Trouble in Minneapolis.
